Dear Readers,
I want to begin this letter by stating my support for the return of the ITA’s 2015 Tanning World Expo that will take place in Columbus, OH on September 25-27. I’m endorsing this event not only because I’m an ITA Board member, but also because I know first-hand that the Board unanimously voted to return 100 percent of the profits from the event back to our industry. Those resources will help fight state issues, like the under-18 tan bans that are sweeping our country, in addition to representing all industry sectors at the Federal level to address regulatory issues that affect our businesses – yours and mine. I am a member of the trade show committee and can assure you that this will be an event you won’t want to miss. In addition to having a great time in Columbus, attendees can receive Sun is Life Training and Certification, along with other quality educational opportunities for salon owners, managers and staff. So, mark your calendars for what will be the year’s biggest industry event in a city that will surely leave you with positive memories. On that same note, if you’re not an ITA member, it’s time for you to make it happen – it’s YOUR industry association. For more info, be sure to read “ITA Update”.
Making a repeat appearance this month, our Cover Story subject is a critical issue facing our industry: the push by individual states to ban tanning for people 18 and under. While some members of the industry support such bans, this month’s story explains why the ITA is determined to fight these ban attempts. Our new Staff Writer Christy Capelin talked to salon operators who are involved in battles in their own backyards. Read how you can easily help to ensure that your state does not pass legislation that could significantly impact YOUR business and livelihood.
Also in this issue, we highlight Sun Capsule, the veteran East Coast stand-up maker that recently changed ownership. Read about new owner Tom Holland’s plans for growth and helping salons succeed with Sun Capsule products. I’d also like to welcome Tom as a newly appointed member of the ITA’s Board of Directors.
Our loyal readers know that ist Magazine is the industry’s leader because of the quality of our content. This month, we add three new contributing columnists to our esteemed list: Jerry Deveney of Four Seasons, Chad Hankinson of Helios, and Melissa Damiani of SunLync. We’re very happy to share their expertise with you. If there is a subject you’d like to see featured in your IST, please let me know.
Lastly, we depart a bit from the usual with another feature contributed by our great friend, industry veteran and animal advocate, Brenda Fishbaugh of Eye Pro. She and her husband Steve recently spent some time in Kenya – I know you’ll enjoy her story and beautiful photos in “Back to Africa”. Thanks, Brenda! Thanks for reading,
