In March, ASA kicked off a powerful campaign to show the federal government that the 10% Tan Tax unfairly targets women and needs to be repealed immediately. The multi-faceted campaign began with a request to the entire indoor tanning market asking salons, operators and customers to sign an appeal to lawmakers to repeal the tax. The market responded positively and nearly 10,000 postcards were signed and shipped to Washington to show our country’s leaders that women’s issues are important and the Tan Tax needs to be repealed.

Indoor tanning’s “War on Women” campaign will continue through 2018 or until the Tan Tax is repealed, and we need everyone in the industry to make their voices heard. Thanks to web-based technology, making this happen only takes a few minutes a month. ASA will post a different message every two weeks that will be automatically populated into an email portal for your U.S. senator and representative. Just click the link and it will send you to the portal where you will only need to enter your name and address and click “send.” The message and link will be posted on AmericanSuntanning.org on the 1st and the 15th of each month. Set your calendar to remind you to go to the site to get your new message and complete your plea to your representative. Sending the email will take less than a minute, so if you have time, make a call to your senator and House member and leave the same message by phone.

Repeal of the Tan Tax can succeed if thousands of us participate and contact our senators and representatives twice monthly to remind them of how devastating the tax has been to our businesses, our jobs, and most importantly, to women. ASA has streamlined this effort to help put an end to the onerous tax. Make this campaign a priority and take action today.

Men Can Sell A Suntan Without Penalty But Women Can’t?

Before the 10% Tan Tax was implemented in 2010, there were more than 18,000 primarily women-owned tanning salons in the US employing more than 160,000 women. After eight years of this unfair tax, more than 10,000 businesses have closed and more than 100,000 women have lost their jobs. But men who own gyms are exempt from the Tan Tax. They are allowed to steal my customers and put me out of business because of this gender targeting tax. Making matters worse, this tax has only raised a small fraction of its projections and has failed in every way possible. In 2009, CBO projected the Tan Tax would generate $270 million per year. OMB and IRS reveal that the Tan Tax has raised only $85 million per year and those numbers continue to shrink. By closing 10,000 businesses and putting more than 100,000 American women out of work, the Tan Tax actually cost The U.S. Treasury in lost income taxes, lost payroll taxes, unemployment insurance and SBA loan defaults. Women’s businesses continue to close every day due to the Tan Tax. Women business owners need your help NOW! REPEAL THE UNFAIR 10% TAN TAX – SUPPORT H.R. 1150 AND S. 2600
