From an early age, experiences will begin to condition our brains to process and manage the negative experiences of loss, defeat, betrayal and such, as well as embracing such positive emotions as happiness, fulfilment and love. A balance of these experiences undoubtedly contributes toward shaping us into well-rounded individuals who are ready, willing and able to lead productive lives in society.

As such, I see myself as pretty much a “Regular Joe” in life, much the same as the next hardworking, honest and reliable man, and a passionate believer and defender of democracy. For me, personally, the democratic process is at the core of any civilised society. Three years ago, the British public, at the behest of Government, exercised its democratic right in a national referendum to vote on whether Britain should remain part of or leave the European Union (EU). The decision of the British public was that we should leave.

Three years have passed since then and during that time, our political system has been entangled in what can perhaps best be described as an elementary playground scuffle! Our media, our conversations and, to a greater extent, our lives have been dominated by this unforgiving and complicated process. Somewhere along the tortuous path of debate, discussion and negotiation, and amongst all the political infighting, our elected Members of Parliament (MPs) appear to have forgotten the democratic decision of the British people – i.e. those who elected them into Parliament – that Britain voted to leave the EU.

As such, we find ourselves at an impasse and as I write this, today 29th March 2019, the day we were due to leave the EU, our elected MPs voted against the withdrawal agreement negotiated by government with the EU and as such, means there is potential for a no-deal Brexit.

In the midst of a crisis, at least one positive has emerged that the whole tanning industry is very happy to embrace.

This is a moment of crisis – this is democracy action, albeit in shambles and I have no doubt anyone from the outside looking in will surely be aghast at the mess our politicians have made of this situation.

Yet, in what I can only describe as a bizarre but very welcome positive in this incredibly unfortunate situation, and as a result of Joe Public being without doubt completely and utterly fed-up with the narrative, there has been an unexpected boom to business. As if in some small way to reward themselves for having to deal with the frustration and tedium of the whole Brexit process, consumers are seeking out inexpensive but rewarding ways to treat themselves. As such, salon operators up and down the country are reporting on a novel Brexit effect. And for our industry, it’s a positive, as salon visits are seeing new highs for this time of year. We have operators nationwide upscaling new season orders in response to unexpected footfall hitting tanning salons. “I need an escape from Brexit,” and words to that effect are ringing in and around salons up and down the country.

So, in the midst of a crisis, at least one positive has emerged and one that I and no doubt the whole tanning industry is very happy to embrace.
