So, here we go folks – it’s another New Year! I sincerely hope it brings you everything you wish and have worked hard for!

After the fun and frivolity of The Holidays, a New Year for most brings with it fresh impetus, drive and ambition. What new products will do well? Have we anticipated the trends or, will we be creating them? What challenges will we have to face and how will we meet them?

But, before we leap forward into 2018, we should spend a little time reflecting on the successes and events of 2017 and ensure, where necessary, we have learned from our experiences by making any appropriate adjustments to our business operation. This could be anything and everything, from tweaking an in-salon protocol, through to a full review of the marketing strategy and that perennial task: competitor analysis. Ultimately, we should consider what have we learned or benefitted from over the last 12 months that could be employed to further improve the experience offered in our business going forward.

A good example of “teaching an old dog new tricks” is, with all due respect, our own Royal Household. Established for many centuries, there have been a countless number of polar opposite achievements in getting things right or wrong – depending upon your personal point of view. So, one would think that by now, there wouldn’t be too many scenarios that hadn’t been encountered in one way or another for the Royal Household to manage with dignity and aplomb.

In most recent times (in the context of centuries), it was the poor management of the Royal Household’s actions post the tragic death of Princess Diana and the resultant public outrage that realised a review of the way Royal events, announcements and indeed relationships were managed. Today, the pomp and ceremony are absolutely maintained where appropriate. But there has been a careful, genuine and welcomed relaxation introduced through the younger members of the Royal Household. One only has to look at the relaxed and informal way the recent engagement between our fourth in line to the throne, Prince Harry and your delightful Meghan Markle was announced. There’s a real excitement about the future of the Royal Household going forward and, as such, the Royal Family is perhaps as popular now as it has ever been and this outcome is absolutely good for business!

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been operating your salon, there is always opportunity to improve. The day when you think you have everything just right is, quite possibly, the day you would later look back on and regret as the day the onset of complacency took root.

So, here’s to a successful 2018 – and may we all continue to learn and prosper from each other during a year when our “ties” will become even closer! Congratulations to the Happy Couple!
