This month’s Salon of Distinction comes our way from beautiful West Palm Beach, FL. How nice, huh? Just what most of us who are slogging our way through a wet and cold winter could really use: some warm weather from The Sunshine State! I caught up with Michelle Brauner, Copper Tan Professional Salon District Manager, who took a time-out to give me the “down low” on what makes it happen at their salons.

IST: Michelle, how did Copper Tan get its start in the industry?

MB: The salon chain was started in Ohio by Stanley Olszewski over 25 years ago. With the success there, they decided to move to a warmer climate. We now have seven locations in South Florida.

IST: You have just completed Sun is Life certification. How important is having a trained staff?

MB:Oh, my gosh – it’s so vital! Being trained with factual information allows us to explain to our guests the differences between tanning indoors in moderation and tanning outside in natural sunlight where there is no control. It also helps us dispel the negatives that our tanners hear from the media.

IST: How would describe the demographics of your clientele?

MB:Joe, it’s pretty diverse. At one location, we go from 18 to 81! Our mix is not typical for the industry, where it’s 70-75% female. Our customer ratio is more like 50-50 women to men.

IST: What would you say has been the biggest obstacle to overcome?
[gap height=”15″]
MB:Well, as I said earlier, the negatives that usually come from the media create challenges, for sure. And, it can also be some of the pre-conceived notions that the public has about indoor tanning. But thankfully, there are a lot of people in this area who enjoy the glow we give them!

IST: What are Copper Tan’s future goals?

MB: Great question! We want to increase our client base and become the best and most successful salon chain in South Florida!
