Like many service-related industries, the salon & spa business deals with its fair share of employee turnover. Having to constantly train new staff can be expensive, tiresome and frustrating. Furthermore, it prevents you from operating your business efficiently and distracts you from making sales.
To address this issue, Universal Insurance has created four educational videos that focus on salon safety and limiting and minimizing insurance claims.
1. Preventing Water Damage
Claims related to water damage rank among the top three of all insurance claims in both occurrence and cost. And most could easily be prevented by having a pro-active plan in place. When water damage does occur, the real headaches are related to clean-up and business interruption.
This video reviews five ways to prevent water damage to your salon as well as surrounding businesses.
Spoiler Alert: Water damage related to faulty spray-tan systems and connections steals the show!
2. Preventing UV Overexposure
In the U.S., all devices that emit UV-light, including tanning beds and booths, are regulated by the FDA and are listed as Class-2 medical devices.
To avoid UV overexposure, which can result in burns to the skin, skin irritation, eye damage, photosensitive reactions, etc., there are several important guidelines that you should follow.
This video covers the FDA’s Recommended Exposure Schedule, Skin Typing, Adverse Reactions to Photo-Sensitive Medications, Compliant Protective Eyewear, and Determining Replacement Lamp Compatibility. Furthermore, it is prudent that salons review their insurance coverage to ensure that their policies actually cover skin cancer – and not just general liability.
3. Preventing Slips, Trips & Falls
Slips, trips and falls are among the leading causes of both commercial business and workplace-related accidents. In fact, slips, trips and falls are often reported as the most common causes of both workers’ compensation and customer-initiated claims.
Tanning Salons are especially susceptible to slip, trip and fall injuries due to heavy foot traffic combined with the use of spray-tan systems and tanning lotions, as well as the constant spraying of liquid cleaning solutions to sanitize the tanning systems.
This video covers how to deal with such issues and also how to prevent potentially hazardous situations from developing.
4. Preventing Claims Related to Sexual Harassment, Invasion of Privacy
The subjects of Invasion of Privacy and Sexual Harassment are front and center in the world today. Your salon’s relaxed, friendly environment is attractive to appearance-conscious customers, yet it also provides an atmosphere where even the most professional employees may unintentionally drop their guard and cross the line into the danger zone.
Salon guests also have an expectation of “privacy” when they patronize your business as they are required to share both personal and financial information. And you, as the business owner, are legally bound and obligated to protect them on all fronts.
This video explores the areas of your business model where you may be vulnerable, including the behavior of your staff and customer interaction, as well as the physical design of your business.
