FIRE! It’s a word that elicits terror in the heart of any business owner and unfortunately, we’ve recently seen an uptick of fire events in tanning salons, with entire shopping centers damaged or destroyed. And the culprit, oftentimes, is a tanning unit.
Any time electrical equipment is used in a business there is a chance of fire, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood. Every tanning unit manufacturer offers their recommendations for regular maintenance. Many salon owners do their own maintenance; however, you should still have equipment inspected by a licensed technician on a scheduled basis. If you purchase used equipment, verify that it has been inspected. If it’s refurbished, inquire into the qualifications of the person who did the work. Be sure to have a licensed electrician install tanning equipment – this is not an expense you should skimp on.
There is nothing you can do that guarantees you will never have a fire, but you should always be prepared for one.
There are also proactive measures that don’t require a technician’s visit. One of a tanning bed’s worst enemies is dust – it accumulates like a blanket over and between the lamps and other electrical components. A monthly opening and dusting of these areas will not only help prevent overheating of the components, but it will improve their efficiency. You may find that you need to replace your lamps less often if kept clean, which not only saves you money but also keeps your salon guests happy!
When you replace lamps, take the opportunity to check the starters and connectors, as well. These connectors aren’t meant to last the lifetime of the unit and should be replaced around every other lamp change. Popping sounds from your unit are not a good thing and could be a sign that these connectors are worn out. Sparking could also occur from faulty connections.
And finally, don’t try to use your tanning system beyond its natural life. Your tanners trust you to place them in equipment that will do what you say it will and will not harm them in the process. Imagine finding out that your doctor was using 15-year-old x-ray equipment. You might be a little concerned! The same can be said for your tanning units. We think nothing of replacing computers, TVs and cars every few years. Your business equipment should be just as much a priority.
There is nothing you can do that guarantees you will never have a fire, but you should always be prepared for one. Make sure you have fire extinguishers located throughout your salon. They should be charged on a regular basis and your staff should be trained to use them. Create an evacuation plan and make sure exits are clearly marked. If you hear any electrical popping in a unit, do not use it again until you have had it serviced. And, most importantly, if you notice smoke or fire, get everyone out of the building and call 911!
Insurance is also an important part of being prepared for a fire. If you are unsure of how your policy would respond in the event of a fire or any other loss, speak with your agent. They can go over your limits, deductibles and coverage to ensure that you wouldn’t suffer a financial burden … one less thing for you to worry about. ■
