Finally … the Busy Season is near! That means scheduling extra staff, stocking your shelves with additional retail items, and the best part – more customers walking through your doors!
[gap height=”15″]
However, regardless of where your salon is located, it is important to remember that every business is susceptible to crime at any time. It would be nice to think, “my business won’t get robbed, my customers won’t steal, and my staff won’t cheat.” However, it is often at this time of year, right after the holidays, that crime rates increase.

Most salons display their retail items, including lotions, clothing and accessories, in the front area of the store. As your staff is cleaning the tanning equipment or walking a tanner to their room, who is keeping watch over these valuable items?
[gap height=”15″]
If you can’t have multiple employees running the salon, then you should seriously consider surveillance cameras. If items or cash are missing, you can easily view salon activity on camera. You might be surprised by what you will see!
[gap height=”15″]
Installing a central station alarm system and/or video surveillance camera is an easy and inexpensive way to decrease the chance of a break-in and they can also reduce the amount of damage done. Remember to include the steps of turning the alarm ON and OFF as standard opening and closing procedures. Also, place the “warning” stickers that the alarm company provides on doors and windows. Many times, these stickers alone will help deter criminal actions.

To help prevent robbery after hours, you should put retail items away, so as not to tempt someone to break in. Burglars are typically looking for cash, electronics and other retail items they can easily resell.
[gap height=”15″]
If you keep cash in the salon, whether in the register or in a safe, be sure your insurance policy covers “Theft of Money and Securities.” Theft of Money and Securities coverage is designed to provide protection against loss of money and securities resulting directly from theft and/or any act of stealing, disappearance and/or destruction. It can also be extended to cover money away from your premises, such as when you or your staff takes funds to the bank.

Often, insurance providers hear, “I’ve known my employees for years and I trust them. Do I really need Employee Dishonesty Insurance?”
[gap height=”15″]
It would be great if all employees were 100 percent trustworthy and that employee theft didn’t occur. Unfortunately, debt, personal problems and even peer pressure can make the nicest people exercise poor judgement and behave dishonestly.
[gap height=”15″]
And when employees are dishonest, it usually takes quite a while before these acts are discovered. Thousands of dollars in cash and product are gone and you’re left wishing you had added Employee Dishonesty Insurance coverage to your policy.
[gap height=”15″]
Hopefully, these tips and appropriate insurance coverage can help guard your business against a potential loss. Business insurance is a crucial step; but, not all accidents are covered under your business policy. Make sure your staff locks up their belongings and your customers don’t leave things behind in the tanning rooms. A business insurance policy does not cover customer or employee possessions.
