In the past, we’ve talked about keeping equipment manuals in your facility and the types of information every salon operator should have on file for each tanning system in their inventory. Please excuse our repetition of these things, but this info can save you both time and money.

When ordering replacement lamps for tanning systems, the simplest solution is to always replace them with the same product that was supplied originally by the bed’s manufacturer, or with an FDA-registered compatible lamp. If choosing an FDA-compatible product, make sure that your sunlamp supplier provides the necessary documentation for you to keep on file in your facility.

It helps if you have the following information easily available for each bed or booth in your salon, as this practice will keep you from having to research the info every time you order replacement lamps. Provide your distributor representative with the following:
[gap height=”15″]
- Make, model number and year of your bed(s)
- Lamp(s) recommended for use in your bed (listed on label next to the recommended UV exposure schedule)
- Make and model of the lamps you are currently using
- Know whether the lamp is a reflector or non-reflector model, and information such as length and wattage.
- The exact number of lamps needed and facials, if necessary
- What do you like or dislike about the current lamp? Talk to your distributor rep about performance, useful life, reliability, etc.

When you’re ready to re-lamp your tanning systems (which should, of course, be before you start receiving complaints from your tanners), having this information handy will enable your distributor rep to better serve you on the first call. And speaking of distributors, the right lamp choices can be key to your bottom line! You want to order from a company you are familiar with and that can advise you on the features and benefits of all products they have available. Just because they may have an attractive price on lamps doesn’t mean that they will stand behind their service/product if you are dissatisfied. When it comes to product providers, there is meaning in the adage: “you should be as easy to reach for a complaint as for an order.”

Team Wolff would like to extend special kudos to those salon operators we’ve met at various trade shows who were prepared with the details needed to quickly arrive at competent lamp choices. The more information you are armed with, the better you’ll be able to compare and make good business decisions. Being fully prepared when you call a distributor or visit a manufacturer at a trade show will allow you to choose the products that offer you the best value and performance to support your business and keep your tanners happy.
