Federal Issues
Congress reconvened in September with a number of difficult issues to tackle, and there are few signs of progress on the horizon.
On Capitol Hill, our friends continue to talk about repealing Obama Care and the dreaded Tan Tax, but the likelihood of that happening under this administration is bleak at best, and most insiders agree at least in the short term, this is going to be a very difficult goal to achieve.
However, it is still important keep the issue front and center, and to that end, we are working with the National Federation of Independent Business to spread the word about our industry’s situation and keep pressure on policymakers.
Please visit theita.com, click on “Government Relations” and use the link to email your Representative and Senators urging repeal of the Tan Tax.
State Issues
The vast majority of the state legislatures have adjourned for the year, but there are still a few trouble spots we are watching closely, including Massachusetts and New York. Both of these states have proposed under-18 bans. Unfortunately, there were reports in early September that a new under-18 ban is being considered for introduction in Wisconsin. As soon as we can look at the legislation, we will alert Wisconsin businesses.
Salon operators in Wisconsin have lived with an under-16 ban for more than a decade, which again demonstrates the fact that the other side will never let up on this issue. The ITA has always opposed age restrictions and will continue to do so.
The ITA Board is in agreement that this creeping intervention into our industry by state governments attempting to impose age restrictions is most threatening. However, through fundraising initiatives such as the Tanning World Expo, we will rebuild our war chest and be better armed to combat any state fights on the horizon. ■
Executive Director’s Report
Thanks for your support!
On behalf of the ITA Board of Directors, I want to thank all of our many friends – old and new – who came to Columbus in September to support and take part in the revival of the Tanning World Expo!
As most of you know, our last event was in 2008 and I think it is safe to say that this show was long overdue! The Tanning World Expo was created to offer business and networking opportunities for our members, and the proceeds from the show are reinvested in the industry to fund the national programs designed to protect your livelihoods and promote the health and future of the indoor tanning industry. You have our pledge: that will not change!
Columbus was a wonderful host city – affordable, centrally located and new! The Board will meet later in the year to discuss and finalize plans for the 2016 event. Stay tuned for that announcement.
Thanks,
John Overstreet
