[gap height=”15″]In October, Four Seasons Tanning hosted the National Tanning Expo in St. Charles, MO, where IST Publisher, Vince Lorraine, met Diana Zajicek of Paradise Tan Wellington, a salon located just outside of West Palm Beach, FL. He told me that she was a “must” to be interviewed and a call to Diana confirmed her enthusiasm for the tan biz! Here’s the 411:[gap height=”15″]

IST: Diana, let’s start at the beginning. How did you get your start in the industry?
[gap height=”15″]
DZ: As a teenager, I worked at this salon as the manager when the owner would travel. Then, I had the opportunity to buy shares in the business and bought them out three years ago.

IST: How did you decide on the decor direction for Paradise Tan?
[gap height=”15″]
DZ: Actually, I am still in the process of renovating – I want to create more of a beachy, South Florida vibe – a peaceful oasis feel. We did the lotion display in beachwood material and, of course, we needed pastel blue, seashell-shaped lobby chairs!
[gap height=”15″]
IST: Sounds like a nice transition. Diana, many salons may struggle (or at least have some difficulty) establishing and maintaining EFTs. Without divulging “trade secrets,” how have you been able to drive EFTs? What is the biggest obstacle to overcome?
[gap height=”15″]
DZ: I was one who did not see the overall picture of EFT memberships. But my mentor/bestie Rhonda Culligan (previous owner of Body Heat Tanning in Coral Springs, FL, 45 minutes away) finally broke it down the way veteran salon operator, Mike Blore would. Add value to your memberships! I created the All Access membership and purchased a red-light therapy system and sales quickly skyrocketed. In less than two years, we went from about $600 monthly in memberships to $16,000! My biggest obstacle was understanding the true VALUE of EFTs. To all the salon owners who are struggling and thinking, “in my small town, no one will buy it”: get that out of your head! I was in the same mindset and I promise the second you change that and simply make the EFT membership your best deal and No.1 focus, you will thank me. EFTs are the lifeline of any tanning business, small or big!
[gap height=”15″]
IST: You spoke to IST Publisher, Vince Lorraine about Sun is Life® salon operator certification. How important is it that your team is properly trained?
[gap height=”15″]
DZ: That’s easy. Sun is Life ensures that my staff not only understands responsible tanning, but also learns the benefits and positive effects that can come with UV tanning. The Sun is Life creators also have 40 years of experience and know all of the ins and outs.
[gap height=”15″]
IST: What is your best recommendation for handling guest complaints?
[gap height=”15″]
DZ: Kill them with kindness! The customer is ALWAYS right. Without them, we are nothing! I go above and beyond to make sure that not only are they getting the best tan, but also the best experience. It’s true that people won’t always remember what you said to them, but they will always remember the way you made them feel.
[gap height=”15″]
IST: What are your short-term and long-term goals for Paradise Tan?
[gap height=”15″]
DZ: Short-Term Goal: Finish Renovating my salon – our lobby is basically completed, next will be our spray-tan rooms. Long-Term Goal: I want to get my EFTs to $20,000 this coming season. I believe if we have the mindset and tools, we will get there! We just bought the new 2020 ProSun RenuvaSkin L3200 red-light therapy machine that is going to knock the socks off our guests!

IST: Kick-start time! Do you reach for coffee, tea, a soft drink or nothing needed to start your day?
