Happy tanners = happy salon owner, an equation that makes Sinfully Good Body & Soul the happiest salon in Stow, OH.
In November 2007, Diane Hannig became the manager of a tanning salon in Stow, OH. Later, she purchased the business and transformed it into a cleaner, sharper, more efficient version of its former incarnation. “I initially wanted a part-time job as a tanning consultant to earn some extra money,” said Diane, “and the owners decided to replace their former manager with me. Since they lived in Pennsylvania, they needed someone who would basically operate their business for them while they decided whether they wanted to keep it.” In the meantime, Diane had to take a crash course in all things indoor tanning in order to oversee every aspect of the salon’s operations. “My first month on the job,” she said, “I significantly raised the sales revenue.”
After five years of Diane running the show, the owners came to a decision. “As absentee owners,” she said, “they realized they couldn’t give the salon what it needed to thrive, so they offered me the chance to purchase it. Since I had come to love everything about it, especially the tanners, it was very easy for me to accept the offer,” she said. After sealing the deal in March 2012, she continues to emphasize a high level of customer service. “Everyone is struggling with something in their life,” Diane said, “so the smile they get from our staff when they come here might be the only one they receive all day. This is why I tell my team that we’re not just a tanning a salon, we’re here to treat our guests the way we would want to be treated.”
After completing every level of Norvell University’s sunless training, Diane now has her sights set upon earning Sun Is Life® certification. “Education is the best tool a salon operator can have,” she said, “and I’ve read a lot about Sun Is Life. I agree with its philosophy of avoiding health claims about tanning. I don’t need to do that because it’s enough for me to see the difference tanning makes in the lives of my guests every day.” Diane had plans to start the Sinfully Good staff on the Sun Is Life training program sometime before the peak tanning months to help prepare them and strengthen her bond with them. “Training your staff is investing in them,” she added, “and it also increases their sense of ownership in the business.”
Because she comes to work with a smile each day, Diane does whatever she can to make sure her guests leave with one, too. This will mean expanding her services in the near future. “Because a large portion of our tanners are from suburban Cleveland,” she said, “I’d like to open a mini salon somewhere in that area. I know that many of our guests would appreciate the opportunity to get a Sinfully Good tan closer to home, and this fits with my plan to grow the business I love so much!”
