No sooner have we dusted down from the holidays and welcomed in the New Year than our focus, quite rightly, is straight back on the 2018 tanning season, which is just around the corner. This is one of my most favourite times of the year! We are full of plans, goals and high expectations that THIS year will be even better than last, and with every good reason, I suggest.

I believe that as an industry, we are truly more united globally than we have ever been. Regular and effective dialogue between the various tanning associations and organisations has realised some impressive results of late, and there is so much more that can and will be done with what is really quite an exceptional network. Information is power and the collation and sharing of information delivers an excellent platform to assist local tanning associations in addressing their own issues and indeed opportunities. From this perspective alone, our industry can only build and grow.

There’s a clear role for each piece of the jigsaw puzzle to ensure the continued growth and professionalism of our industry and for all of us to share in these experiences and developments wherever our business happens to be around the world. And for sure, this also includes a continued investment in R&D to further the groundbreaking developments in indoor tanning technology; developing the research behind the science and ingredients to deliver the ultimate support products and lotions for the indoor tanning experience and, of course, ensuring we embrace all that IT offers to deliver the ultimate customer care management and support.

We also see a very real shift in the approach of a significant percentage of new start-ups and developing businesses. Exceptional professionalism exists in all areas of these businesses, including significant investment in studio location, décor, equipment and products together with the all-important investment in staff. The ripple effect of these commitments should not be underestimated. They are, without doubt, raising the bar of expectation amongst consumers and again, this can only help build and grow our industry.

And, of course, it is the continued desire of the consumer to tan that is the force majeure. A growing awareness and understanding about the need to tan responsibly, understanding any contra-indications, and the slow but effective dispelling of anti-tanning mantras are the underbelly to ensuring our natural desire to tan is sustained.

Whether any one element is fuelling another doesn’t really matter, as long as we all grasp the opportunity to step up our efforts in all areas of our business to be the best we can be. What I do know is that this momentum will help drive our industry forward along the right road in 2018 and beyond, and I look forward to sharing the journey with you!
