“Many salons don’t realize that an average salon has less than 50% of their tanners wearing eye protection,” explained Brenda Fishbaugh, Eye Pro President. “A salon that aggressively sells eyewear and pushes eye protection safety could easily approach 70%! This leaves a lot of room for a salon to increase eyewear sales.

“Eyewear sales can be quick and easy earnings, during season or even in slow months,” Fishbaugh continued. “Explaining the importance of wearing eye protection while tanning doesn’t require the same volume of explanation as ‘why this lotion is better than that lotion’, or why an EFT is a great idea.”

Fishbaugh has found that some salon staff don’t even wear eye protection. “A salon team won’t push eyewear if they don’t believe in it, or understand that it’s the federal law for EVERY state,” she states. She agrees that educating tanners is a battle for salon owners. “Consider having staff complete the Eye Protection Module in the online Sun Is Life® program,” she suggests. “The fun, inexpensive and youth-oriented training involves role-playing of situations when a tanner says they don’t want eye protection or won’t spend money on goggles.”

Starting in December, Eye Pro, Inc. will offer an all new FREE online training for the 2018-2019 season called “Want Easy Eyewear Earnings?” Salon staff will learn about FDA recommendations for sunless eyewear and eye protection laws for individual states, along with easy, usable tanning tips, such as how to combat “raccoon eyes.”

“We’ve made a very serious topic really fun!” states Jackie DeWald, Eye Pro Office Manager. “To illustrate our tips, we show all types of animals wearing sunglasses. And, at the end of this fun and informational FREE training, each trainee receives a custom certificate showing they are an eye protection expert.” Many salons display the “Eye Protection Expert” certificates next to the staff’s Sun Is Life certificates.
