This month, Devoted Creations Five Star Diamond Spotlight shines on Aruba Sun & Spa of Abingdon, MD, co-owned by Luke and Lori Golueke. I interviewed the couple to get their thoughts on the business and to share some of their experiences on the road to success.

IST: When did you open your first salon and what was your motivation to do so?

[gap height=”15″]
Luke & Lori: We opened our doors in March 2002 as a result of being less than pleased with our experiences tanning at other local salons. We had also been in the video rental industry for quite some time prior and had met a few key tanning industry people at the video rental trade shows. After several years of research, we finally pulled the trigger and opened our first salon.

IST: What do your customers like the most about Aruba Sun & Spa?

Luke & Lori: People love the variety of services we offer. They really enjoy how we are always keeping things fresh and offering new products and services.

IST: What do you enjoy the most about the business?

Luke & Lori: We love the great people we have met along the way; including our wonderful customers, fellow salon owners, and distributors and product manufacturers.

IST: What are some of your best-selling lotions products – and what is it that customers like most about them?

Luke & Lori: Some of our bestsellers are Mermaid Majesty, #TanLife and Camo Queen. We recently brought in one of the new 2018 lotions, Detour, and can’t restock it on the shelves fast enough! Our guests love that all Devoted Creations lotions are aloe based and great for their skin. They also enjoy the amazing fragrances and find that the Fresh Tek ingredient helps to eliminate “after tan” odor. For guests who want an extra boost of color, the darker bronzers like Detour and Mermaid Majesty (with higher levels of DHA and cosmetic bronzers) gives them the dark tanning results that they are looking for.

IST: How many UV tanning levels do you offer and what are your best-selling packages?

Luke & Lori: We have five tanning levels and offer very competitively priced annual memberships that are extremely popular with our strong following of loyal customers.

IST: What are some of the most successful sales promotions you’ve offered?

Luke & Lori: We proactively jump-start the season with our Black Friday Sale and our Annual 2-Day Sale and Tan Free Weekend. This is when we sell most of our annual memberships.

We are currently testing a “First Class Upgrade” to our EFT memberships. For an additional $19.99, we add several product specials and free sessions in other equipment, including spa services, to their existing EFT membership.

IST: What are your plans for the future?

[gap height=”15″]
Luke & Lori: We will continue to explore additional equipment to augment our tanning services. Looking down the pipeline, we envision adding weight-loss or skin-rejuvenation systems to our menus.
