Dear Readers,
Preparing this month’s issue put my team in a serious mood – be sure to check out our Cover Story about the spread of teen tanning bans across the country. It got us talking about the need to examine serious topics. I feel it’s our responsibility as the industry’s premiere trade publication to bring issues to light that will significantly impact our future.
Will indoor tanning survive and thrive or simply continue to exist? Teen tan bans have been a factor in our business for over a decade. Working against funding issues, we’ve done our best to fight restrictive legislation, but our adversaries may now see a weakness. Salon operators are the most affected by tan bans, but the entire industry must realize that this is crucial. So, read the Cover Story and you’ll begin to understand the industry-changing position we find ourselves in; it will force us to decide how to move forward and will require financial participation from every industry member.
I’ve said it many times – education is the key to making a positive change in our direction. The most important tool in your kit is an educated, certified and well-trained staff! Sun is Life® Training has evolved, in my opinion, into the best salon operator education and certification program available. It WILL prepare your team to offer a professional guest experience in your salons. I’m grateful for the support of forward-thinking industry leaders who believe that this direction – a unified message rather than making health claims – will lead to future prosperity and continued growth for all tanning businesses. These companies deserve your support.
Are you ready for the National Tanning Expo? Sun is Life will be returning to St. Louis, MO as the event’s exclusive certification program. This year, make an investment in your future – whether it’s supporting the fight against anti-tanning legislation or providing your team with quality training. I hope you’ll be able to experience Sun is Life in St. Louis! The time is NOW to show our adversaries that salon operators provide a professional service to millions of people every day.
Lastly, I hope you got time to vote in our 11th Annual Industry Choice Awards. We’ll announce the top nominees in our next issue. As always, there’s lots of great content here, and you can continue to count on ist Magazine to keep you in the loop with critical industry issues.
See you in St. Louis!
