It’s been a very interesting, yet frustrating, time over the last few months, if not three-and-a-half years, to witness the ambivalence that has been shown by our elected Members of Parliament (MPs) toward the democratic decision of the people of the United Kingdom regarding Britain’s exit from the European Union, aka Brexit. I wonder how much you hear about this topic in the U.S.? Quite frankly, it is to the chagrin of many that this topic remains (no pun intended) all-consuming in the UK and perhaps to a somewhat lesser extent, within the rest of Europe. But one thing I do know for sure, is that it’s on the radar of your President. I was quite literally dumfounded to hear that he took the time to participate in a discussion of Brexit on one of our national phone-in and talk radio stations. Quite extraordinary, in fact!

How one voted in the Referendum on Brexit all those years ago has, I fear, become somewhat demoted to a secondary issue as a result of the shenanigans of a significant number of our elected MPs. They appear to be hell-bent on ignoring the people’s vote, confining themselves to a game of political ping-pong. We have made little to no progress in all this time and one can only imagine what could have been achieved in other important areas had our Parliament not been behaving like petulant teenagers.

Fortunately, the same can’t be said for what’s happening in the indoor tanning industry! We are making huge strides behind the scenes toward positioning our industry globally as part of the solution, not the problem – and I must thank Joe Levy for those particular words. I was fortunate to attend and participate in the recent World Tanning Summit in New York, where representatives from all the major indoor tanning communities, including Joe, had the opportunity to discuss and update each other on local, national and international matters. The outcome was a ratification of the next stage of our strategic approach in turning the tide on the anti-tanning lobby and all I can say is I am genuinely honoured and excited to be part of this group.

And all this came on the back of a really exciting and successful event in the UK, where the industry came together to hear a line-up of outstanding presentations, again including Joe – that guy really does get everywhere – delivering great advice and information for businesses, together with an in-depth look at what’s going on in our industry. And the exciting news is that for professional salon operators, the future is looking very bright, indeed!

The delegates attending the event were certainly stirred into action in many different ways, some through their contributions to the discussions on the day and others in their very positive feedback afterwards. The event also received some extremely generous donations, including one from two of our American friends attending – Santo and Lewis, thank you!

So, as we approach the end of what’s been an interesting and successful 2019, I look forward with a zestful determination to delivering our 2020 Vision and sharing news with you in the months ahead!
