OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ – With updated design features, toning tables have returned to indoor tanning by way of the industry veteran who introduced them to salons more than 30 years ago.
Anyone who’s been a part of the tanning industry since the 1980s likely remembers the exercise equipment known as toning tables. Originally designed and developed by Bernard H. Stauffer, these unique, posture-correction machines helped strengthen muscles and increase flexibility and endurance, while also providing a low-impact, isotonic and isometric workout. Tanning industry veteran Leonard Keller, Ph.D and a few others were instrumental in promoting these devices as an ancillary service for tanning facilities, and they quickly became popular with salon operators across the country. As a result, the “tan & tone” fad peaked during the 1980s until finally fading from popularity by the early 1990s.
Now, thanks to Dr. Keller, salon owners will have another opportunity to increase revenue with toning, and he says the new machines are an improvement over their predecessors.
As another “busy season” winds down, Keller, President of Health & Fitness Concepts International, Inc., will debut the new Powermetric Toning Chairs. “We recently exhibited our system at the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) tradeshow in Las Vegas, and attendees from the tanning industry inundated us with interest,” said Keller. “These people were industry veterans who remembered the toning table craze of the 1980s, and were very impressed at how far the technology has come since then. We were excited to see so much interest, and we’re certain our units will be a big hit with salon owners looking to earn more revenue by diversifying their services.”
Health & Fitness Concepts’ Powermetric Toning Chairs include nine individually-motorized units designed to firm, tone and tighten the body, while also helping to reduce inches without causing fatigue or muscle strain. By spending three minutes on each machine, users complete a workout circuit in 30 minutes, and usually experience results after a few sessions, Keller says. “These systems are a perfect addition to salons that offer spa services such as body-wraps, red-light therapy and motion-exercise machines, as well as sunless tanning, water massage and just about anything else,” he added. “Our vision for this is very similar to what’s already popular in the industry. Salon owners can either replace a tanning unit with these machines, add a little space for them, or they can open a separate business to offer them.”
