Occasionally, my continual search for article topics takes me to strange places. Witness this month’s topic – although it doesn’t fall into the typical category of anti-tanning media slams, it certainly was odd enough to “rise to the top.” I apologize for the clichés and double entendres, but hey, let’s lighten up and have some fun. It’s a New Year!

At the end of 2019, news reports came out from a young blogger/self-healer called “Metaphysical Megan” on something called “bum sunning” to improve one’s self being. She claimed that this practice can aid in a “healthy libido and balanced sexual energy” while “increasing creativity and creative output.” Well, hey, who doesn’t need all that? I’ve always wanted to try to paint landscapes.

As I further searched Google for more on this topic, I found a report on her from a site called heavy.com. There, I found some fast facts that I needed to know about Megan Whitson, who went viral after her posts advocating this manner of sun exposure included a picture of herself lying on her back with her legs in the air. Along with the photo, was the caption, “30 seconds of sunlight on your (blank) is the equivalent of a full day of sunlight with your clothes on!” Which, of course, prompted additional discussion of whether exercising in the nude might also be better than with clothes on. So, imagine my wife’s concern when she looked over my shoulder while I was researching Megan’s posts, saw the photos and asked what in the world I was doing! “Uh, research, Sweetie. Research.” But I digress.

Cheers (and bottoms up) to a great 2020!

Megan feels that exposing one’s nether region to sunlight is preferred because it is the gateway where energy enters and exits the body. To wit, our organs need solar energy to prevent leakage of lifeforce energy from the body … or, so she says. Well, of course, this practice comes with the instructions to spend no more than five minutes exposing this body part to the sun, as the intention is NOT to try to tan this area. Well, thank goodness for that!

The medical community also weighed in on this practice. Dr Stephanie Ooi from My Health Care Clinic said, “there is absolutely no proven scientific benefit to sunning your perineum … if you have a medical question, seek the advice of a doctor or qualified medical professional.” As covered in Sun is Life® Training and Certification, there are some parts of our bodies that (probably) have never been exposed to sunlight. We advocate protecting those sensitive areas to avoid overexposure and/or sunburn during an indoor UV session.

On that note, some of our readers are aware that I’m an avid hiker. I couldn’t help but fast-forward to a scenario on an upcoming hike in the North Georgia Mountains where I might happen upon a group sprawled across the flat of a ridge, sans clothes, legs pointed to the sky. Would I join or continue my hike? I’d probably just go with the southern greeting of, “Hey, y’all!” and continue to exercise my legs and lungs rather than sunning my um, bum.
