Give more value to your staff and they’ll be more valuable to you! Most salon owners and managers think their young sales staff will sell because you tell them to sell. If that were true, they’d already be crushing it with their lotion sales, specialty product sales and membership upgrades. Let me guess: they’re not.

How about, “They sell because it’s their job to sell. I’ll fire them if they don’t.” Nope. Wrong again. The fact is that your staff will get by with the least effort they can to avoid being singled out. See how fast you mow through good employees to get even worse ones with the “hire-fire; rinse-repeat” method!

“They sell for me because I’m rewarding them to sell; I’m offering them something of value.” Okay, you’re getting warmer! Being noticed, appreciated, rewarded, money… hmmm.
“Maybe my staff really sell because they feel they are a part of something bigger, something inspiring and fun, that their job makes them feel absolutely GREAT about themselves – that is why they’ll go the extra mile for me.”

Ahhh. Now you’re starting to focus on what really motivates a real live person, not an employee! If they believe in you as a real leader (not just a tyrant on a constant war path), and they start feeling like they are part of something bigger than just a job, then you’re finally tapping into the secret to building a tanning business that brings out the best in young salon staff, and with that comes record-breaking lotion sales!

They’ll WANT to serve you because you’re leading by example – being there every day, thanking them “from-the-heart” when they perform well, paying them well when they’re rockin’ the sales, teaching instead of nagging, and being interested in them as people.

Do those things NOW, and you’ll immediately start creating motivated go-getters who’ll sell for you because they value you and your vision more than their paycheck! They want to serve something bigger than just the same ol’-same ol’ boring job!
